What a miss costs, in pounds

Nothing is charged when you join or sign up to a pact. Each miss is one card payment for your stake: 85% is donated to Médecins Sans Frontières UK and 15% is Pledgd's fee. Nobody wins money.

85% of every missed pledge is donated to the charity you chose, currently Médecins Sans Frontières (UK), registered charity no. 1026588. The other 15% is Pledgd's separate platform fee.

Worked examples

On a solo pact, here is what one missed check-in costs at three different stakes.

One missed check-in, in one card payment
StakeDonated to MSF UK (85%)Pledgd fee (15%)Total charged
£2£1.7030p£2.00
£5£4.2575p£5.00
£20£17.00£3.00£20.00

85% of every missed pledge is donated to the charity you chose, currently Médecins Sans Frontières (UK), registered charity no. 1026588. The other 15% is Pledgd's separate platform fee.

There is nothing extra on top: the donation and the fee always add up to your stake.

In a group pact

The stake is for the whole day or week, not each check-in, and it's the same for everyone. At £10, a lost Today pact or a lost week costs you £10 once: £8.50 donated to MSF UK and a £1.50 fee.

A missed £5 check-in is £4.25 donated to MSF UK and a 75p fee. At most £15.00 a week.

Group pacts work differently: one stake of £10 to £500 for the day or the week, the same for everyone.

How a charge works

Your card is saved with Stripe when you sign up to a pact, and nothing is charged up front. Pledgd never sees or stores your full card number. On a solo pact, a miss is charged shortly after that day's deadline, just after midnight your local time. In a group, a lost Today pact is charged once after 11:59 PM UK time that day, and a lost week once after Sunday 11:59 PM UK time. Either way it's one card payment for your stake, split in two:

  • The donation, 85% of your stake, which we pass to Médecins Sans Frontières UK.
  • The platform fee, 15% of your stake, which Pledgd keeps to run the service.

Your receipt shows both parts.

We never call the whole charge a donation, because 15% of it is our fee.

The most you could pay

On a solo pact, you can only be charged on your scheduled days, and only once per day. So the most you can be charged in a week is your stake times your scheduled days. Before you confirm, the app shows your weekly maximum and the most you could be charged over the whole pact.

Solo weekly maximums (examples)
PactMost in a weekMost over 4 weeks
£2, every day£14£56
£5, Mon, Wed, Fri£15£60
£20, Monday to Friday£100£400

Pacts run for 4, 8, 12 or 16 weeks, so an 8-week pact's maximum is twice the 4-week figure.

In a group pact, the most you can be charged is the group's stake: once for a Today pact, or once a week for a weekly pact.

Group pacts and the shared stake

Pick what you're each doing, how often, and by when. If anyone doesn't, everyone's stake is charged: 85% donated to MSF UK, 15% Pledgd's fee. The group has one stake for everyone, from £10 to £500, and one target: once by 11:59 PM UK time in a Today pact, which runs for a single day, or 1 to 7 times a week in a weekly pact, whose weeks run Monday 00:00 to Sunday 11:59 PM UK time. Each person picks their own activity. If anyone locked in for the day or week misses their target, each member is charged their own stake once, after it ends.

Example (made up)

Priya, Tom and you are in a group pact at £10 a week, 3 times a week. Tom only manages twice. When the week ends, each of you is charged £10 once: £8.50 to MSF UK and a £1.50 fee. Across the group that is £25.50 to MSF UK and £4.50 in fees. Priya and you receive nothing from Tom, and Tom receives nothing from you.

How it works

  • Everyone agrees to it. To join a group pact, every member agrees to the shared stake on one consent screen and saves a card. It is how every group pact works.
  • You only pay your own stake. Each person pays their own stake on their own card. There is no pot, and you never pay anyone else. Members see each other's activity, progress and check-ins.
  • It can charge you when you hit your target. A buddy's miss loses the day or week for everyone, so you're charged your own stake even if you hit yours.
  • If everyone hits their target, nobody is charged.
  • It needs two. A Today pact locks in and starts the moment at least two of you are in; nobody can join after that or after 21:00 UK time, and with fewer than two by 21:00 it doesn't run and nobody is charged. A week locks in at Monday 00:00 once at least two of you are in. With fewer, that week doesn't run and nobody is charged.
  • Changes never touch a running day or week. In a weekly pact, opting out, leaving and joining take effect from the next Monday, so nothing done mid-week changes who's in for that week. Once a Today pact has started, leaving doesn't change who's in. The exception is cancelling within your first 14 days by contacting us: that's immediate, and your stake for that day or week is void. For a Today pact, that right ends at its 11:59 PM deadline.
  • Weeks carry on until you opt out. Tap “I'm out next week” any time before Sunday 11:59 PM UK time. The group's creator can also end the pact for everyone from the next Monday; the running week still settles.

85% of every missed pledge is donated to the charity you chose, currently Médecins Sans Frontières (UK), registered charity no. 1026588. The other 15% is Pledgd's separate platform fee.

Receipts

We email you a receipt for every charge. It shows the amount charged and both parts of it: the donation to MSF UK and Pledgd's fee.

Wrong charges and refunds

If you think a charge is wrong, email [email protected], ideally within 14 days. We reply within 2 working days and decide within 10 working days. We refund the charge in full if:

  • you checked in on time, but it wasn't recorded
  • Pledgd was down when you tried to check in
  • you were charged twice, or the wrong amount
  • you'd cancelled or paused a solo pact before the deadline, but were still charged
  • you cancelled within 14 days of signing up

If you couldn't check in because you were seriously ill, in hospital, or dealing with a family emergency or bereavement, email us within 14 days. We don't ask for medical evidence, and we refund the charge in full, up to 2 times in any 12 months. If you know you can't check in, pause a solo pact before the deadline: paused days are never charged. In a weekly pact, tap “I'm out next week” to sit the next week out.

The full policy is on our refunds page.

Chargebacks

Please contact us before asking your bank to reverse a charge. We can refund you directly, while a chargeback reverses the donation to MSF UK and costs a bank fee. Your legal rights are unaffected.

Nobody wins money

Missed stakes go to two places only: the donation to MSF UK and Pledgd's fee. They never go to other users, including your buddies.

  • There are no prizes and no cash rewards.
  • Your stake never grows because someone else missed. In a group pact, a buddy's miss can lose the day or week, but you're only ever charged your own stake.
  • Nothing ranks people by money.

Charity statement

This is the statement we put next to every mention of money going to Médecins Sans Frontières UK:

85% of every missed pledge is donated to the charity you chose, currently Médecins Sans Frontières (UK), registered charity no. 1026588. The other 15% is Pledgd's separate platform fee.

How it's worked out: the donation is 85% of the stake that was missed. The fee is the other 15%.

We pass donations to MSF UK in regular monthly payments, and report how on our transparency page. Pledgd is not a charity and is independent of Médecins Sans Frontières. More on the charity page.
