Money

Is this gambling?

Pledgd is built so that nobody can win money. When you miss, 85% of your stake is donated to Médecins Sans Frontières UK and 15% is Pledgd's fee. Nothing goes to other users and there are no prizes.

85% of every missed pledge is donated to the charity you chose, currently Médecins Sans Frontières (UK), registered charity no. 1026588. The other 15% is Pledgd's separate platform fee.

Does it cost anything to join?

Nothing is charged up front. Joining the waitlist, signing up and setting up a pact don't cost anything. On a solo pact you're charged only for a missed check-in. In a group pact you're charged once, after the day or week ends, if anyone in the group missed their target. The charge is always your own stake.

Where exactly does my money go, and when?

A miss is one card payment for your stake. On a £5 stake, £4.25 is donated to Médecins Sans Frontières UK and 75p is Pledgd's fee. Your emailed receipt shows both parts. We pass donations to MSF UK in regular monthly payments. See transparency.

Can I get money back?

Yes, if the charge was wrong. Email [email protected], ideally within 14 days. We reply within 2 working days and decide within 10. We refund in full when:

  • you checked in on time but it wasn't recorded
  • Pledgd was down when you tried to check in
  • you were charged twice or the wrong amount
  • you'd cancelled or paused a solo pact before the deadline but were still charged
  • you cancelled within 14 days of signing up

Please contact us before asking your bank for a chargeback: a chargeback reverses the donation and costs a bank fee. Your legal rights aren't affected. See refunds.

What happens to my card?

When you sign up to a pact, your card is saved by Stripe, our payment processor. Pledgd never sees or stores your full card number. Nothing is charged up front: the card is only charged after a miss, and you get an email receipt each time.

What’s the most I could be charged?

On a solo pact, your stake times your scheduled check-ins, each week. A £5 stake on Monday, Wednesday and Friday is at most £15 a week, or £60 over 4 weeks. We show your maximum before you confirm. In a group pact, the most is the group's stake: once for a Today pact, or once a week for a weekly pact. More examples.

Why does Pledgd take 15%?

The 15% fee is how Pledgd pays for itself: the app, card processing, support and staff. Your receipt shows the donation and the fee separately, so you can always see both amounts. We never call the fee a donation.

Groups and friends

What if someone in my group misses?

Every group pact uses a shared stake. You each pick what you're doing, and the pact sets how often and by when: once today by 23:59 in a Today pact, or a set number of times by Sunday in a weekly pact. If anyone misses, everyone locked in is charged their own stake once, after the day or week ends. That includes people who hit their target. If everyone hits it, nobody is charged.

Nobody ever receives anyone else's money. How shared stakes work.

What’s a Today pact?

A group pact for a single day. Everyone does their own thing once, by 23:59 UK time. It starts the moment at least two of you are in, and then nobody new can join. If fewer than two are in by 21:00, it doesn't run and nobody is charged. A weekly pact runs Monday to Sunday instead, and keeps going each week until you opt out.

What if I’m invited too late?

A Today pact closes to new people once it has started, or at 21:00 UK time. If you arrive after that, you can start one for tomorrow instead. In a weekly pact, joining counts from the next Monday.

Can my friends win my money?

No. Missed stakes only go to MSF UK (85%) and Pledgd's fee (15%). Not to your friends in the group, and not to anyone else using Pledgd.

Who sees my stake?

In a group, everyone has the same stake, so everyone in it knows the amount. Others see your activity, progress and check-ins, but never your card. On a solo pact, only you see your stake. What friends see.

Do I need friends to use it?

No. A solo pact is just you, for 4, 8, 12 or 16 weeks. Group pacts are there when you want friends in it with you, for a day or week by week. You can also share a solo pact with friends just so they can see it: its money never goes on the group.

Pacts and check-ins

What if I’m ill, or need a break?

Pause a solo pact in the app before the deadline. Paused days are never charged. In a weekly pact, tap “I'm out next week” to sit the next week out. If you couldn't check in because you were seriously ill, in hospital, or dealing with a family emergency or bereavement, email [email protected] within 14 days. We don't ask for medical evidence and refund the charge in full, up to 2 times in any 12 months.

Who checks that I actually did it?

You do. Check-ins are on your honour. In a group pact, the others see each one.

Can I cancel?

Yes. You can cancel within 14 days of signing up to a pact. After that, you can cancel a solo pact in the app: nothing is charged for days after you cancel, and misses before that have already been charged. In a weekly pact, tap “I'm out next week” or “Leave pact” before Sunday 11:59 PM UK time and you're out from the next Monday; the week you're in still counts. A Today pact runs once: you can leave before it starts, but once it has, it counts. Cancelling within the 14 days is the exception: email us and you're out straight away, with no stake for that day or week. For a Today pact, that right ends at its 23:59 deadline.

Your statutory rights as a consumer aren't affected. The terms explain cancellation in full.

What if the app goes down?

If Pledgd was down when you tried to check in, or you checked in on time but it wasn't recorded, email [email protected] and we'll refund the charge in full.

Which time zone is the 11:59 PM deadline in?

On a solo pact, yours: 11:59 PM your local time. Group pacts run on UK time for everyone in the group: a Today pact ends at 11:59 PM that day, and a weekly pact's weeks run from Monday 00:00 to Sunday 11:59 PM.

Safety, access and data

Can under-18s use Pledgd?

No. Pledgd is for people aged 18 and over, because it involves charges to a card.

Is Pledgd accessible?

We're building the site and app to meet WCAG 2.2 AA. Our accessibility statement explains how we test and what we know isn't right yet. If something doesn't work for you, email [email protected] and tell us what happened.

What data do you keep?

For the waitlist, only your email address. In the app, your account details, pacts, check-ins and charge history. Card details are held by Stripe, not by us. The privacy notice has the detail.

How do I leave the waitlist?

Email [email protected] and we'll delete your address from the list.
